ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the analysis of the basic conditions of fertility desire and its influencing mechanisms in three megacities, Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, and then analyzes the differences in fertility desire between the middle class and the other classes in these three cities. It can be said that the relaxation of family planning policy provides researchers with a real sample for observing changes in fertility desire and analyzing the influencing mechanisms. The chapter reviews the main concepts and theories related to fertility desire, and then offers a literature review and commentary on the research related to fertility desire and its influencing factors from recent years. Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou also have differences in fertility desire, with Guangzhou being the highest in terms of ideal number of children and Beijing the highest in terms of expected number of children.
