ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter provides an overview of the contexts for and recent developments in internationalisation in higher education (HE) in East Asia, addressing the current debates and state of research into the policy frameworks and practices in the sector. It discusses student mobility trends, internationalisation of the curriculum, teaching and learning, transnational education, and the growth of regional education hubs. It offers insights into national and regional identity and regional cooperation in internationalisation in HE in the East Asian region. The new geopolitical tensions affecting internationalisation in HE in the region and the emergence of ‘geopoliticsedu’ are also addressed in the chapter.
