ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is human subject research. We define and discuss the role of Institutional Review Boards in reviewing, approving, and monitoring research involving human subjects in order to ensure that all research is conducted in accordance with federal, institutional, and ethical guidelines. We provide an overview of the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI training), including information for students about what to expect and a rationale for human subject training. A brief synopsis of Rebecca Skloot’s book, “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” will enlighten students about this. The chapter concludes with a brief overview of types of Religious Studies projects requiring IRB approval and CITI training.
