ABSTRACT

Remedial education has played a very important part in the treatment of the young offender within the last few years, and despite the problems which are ‘peculiar’ to such a school, satisfactory progress has been made in this field. The Approved School lends itself in many cases advantageously to the attack on backwardness, and on the other hand presents great difficulties which are not met in ordinary educational establishments. The teacher in the Approved School is supplied with a very comprehensive history of each lad, a history which includes psychological, psychiatric, social and family background, which taken together present an excellent picture on which one can prepare the attempts to help him. The school magazine plays an important part in written work. Nature study plays an important part in school and recreational studies.
