ABSTRACT

The teacher of adult illiterates need not be an expert at anything but should be resilient and prepared to ‘Have a go’. A great help, particularly in teaching adult foreigners speaking little English, is the medium of puppetry. Marionettes are much more successful than glove puppets at this age. Some men have failed to learn through constant illness during childhood or suffered from physical defects, untreated speech defects, defects of sight and hearing; and with individual care and understanding can overcome the effects of these even now. Workers from Jamaica, West Africa, Hungary and many other nationalities who can barely make themselves understood when they arrive in this country are keen, and eager to take advantage of classes for adult illiterates.
