ABSTRACT
This chapter assesses the advantages of the form teacher as an art teacher. A friendly, relaxed atmosphere is most important during the art period. Working negatively in favour of the form teacher is the fact that an art specialist may care more for his subject than for the children. Art and craft are very closely allied and in a big secondary modern school, with its emphasis on academic subjects, often the only ‘crafts’ taught are woodwork and/or metal-work for the boys and domestic subjects, such as housecraft and needlework for the girls. Service to the community is important to these children. The teacher should also care for the subject enough to want to draw or paint for his own amusement.
