ABSTRACT

Multiple drivers—cultural, social, emotional, economic, environmental, neurophysiological, psychological, political, and spiritual—inform food environments and influence food choices. This chapter offers an exploration and analysis of inner dimensions and inner work as important aspects of the transition to a greater sustainability and awareness in our relationship with food. Inner work involves engaging in embodied experiences with support and enabling these experiences to inform our ideas, language, and perspectives. We discuss mindfulness and other approaches to increase awareness, self-compassion, and an ethic of care in relation to food, which may lead to practices of mindful citizenship and consumership. Words of caution and areas for further research are noted.
