ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview of Indigenous Peoples’ food systems, acknowledging their diversity, while identifying key sustainability attributes that unite many of these systems. Evidence reveals the resilience of Indigenous communities as they steward natural environments and reclaim their food systems. The authors of this chapter recognise and celebrate the tremendous diversity that characterises Indigenous Peoples’ food systems, within and between communities, as well as acknowledge the impact of cultural adaptation, colonisation, globalisation, and climate change on these food systems. We present key sustainability attributes prevalent in many Indigenous Peoples’ food systems that characterise their preservation and promotion while addressing global sustainability goals. This chapter concludes with outlining challenges to overcome and opportunities for Indigenous Peoples’ food systems in the context of global change towards advancing a more nourishing future for all.
