ABSTRACT

In the African context, the challenges linked to current food systems take on a whole new level of complexity. The factors at the root of food system problems are described in other chapters of this book. Systemic and practical, local and global, historic and current issues are muddled up and difficult to entangle, including long histories of oppression, occupation, of poverty, malnutrition, insufficient development progress, and challenges with governance and global pressures. Sustainable future pathways will require changes in several areas, including shifts in production and consumption patterns, development of innovative products, and the roles and opportunities provided to women. This chapter offers a systems perspective, before formulating sustainable, innovative solutions. Through innovative and sustainable solutions, and by learning to avoid issues evident in food systems in the Global North, with abundant strategies and investments, Sub-Saharan Africa has the potential to become a leading food industry actor on the global market.
