ABSTRACT

India is currently in a totally different arena since the Green Revolution era, with formidable challenges of nutritional insecurity and sustainability of production systems. To enable an analysis of India’s food and land use systems, and a movement towards identifying the issues and prospects of the concept of sustainable diets in the Indian context, this chapter analyses the determinants of sustainable diets from a sustainability and public health perspective. A broad overview is provided of various policies and programmes acknowledging food and nutrition security and promoting environmental and economic stability. Plausible ways forward are suggested using the levers of convening and coordination; assessment, monitoring, and evaluation; communication and education; and policy advocacy. This chapter proposes a systems strengthening farm-to-fork approach that reflects the multidisciplinary determinants of sustainable diets.
