ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the double-edged sword of cross-media and transmedia journalism strategies. It will draw upon the author's case study research into cross-media production in Thai-newsrooms to examine methods of planning content across multiple platforms in the effort to improve the quality of journalism. Within the uniqueness of Thailand’s cross-media model, where innovative social-media news narratives are used to create entry points for news stories to be consumed by different audiences, newsrooms should be able to integrate the specialized abilities of different teams to create greater and wider impacts from news stories. Case studies of Thai newsrooms show success in using cross-media journalism to achieve the kind of quality that leads to the tackling of social problems. The problem in Thai journalism reflects the concerns of some scholars about algorithmic selection of information and the potential creation of filter bubbles.
