ABSTRACT

Journalism has long been associated with the key place of its production: the newsroom. This chapter focuses on a particular change in the where of journalism: the use of short-term physical or even virtual spaces to host temporary news production sites or what are sometimes called pop up newsrooms. Some temporary organizations are affiliated with an existing permanent organization and may be located within the same workspace or even outside of it. As the creation of a temporary organization may bring together strangers who need to rely on each other, one of the key issues in considering their functioning has been the area of trust. Pop up newsrooms seeking to connect with and develop deeper understanding of communities are often located outside permanent newsroom spaces. Interloper pop up newsrooms include those that replicate some professional journalism practices and even collaborate with traditional newsrooms as was seen with some Syrian pop up news operations.
