ABSTRACT

Journalism as “the broadest possible range of activities associated with news making” is often questioned whether the broadest possible range of populations within society is considered in news making. New America Media, an ethnic media network active until its closure in 2017, identified approximately 3,000 media outlets in the United States. At City University of New York’s Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, the Center for Community Media launched its Black Media Initiative in 2020. Legacy Black media boast nearly 200 years of rich history. Research on Black-owned media outlets tends to focus on the genesis of legacy Black media, specifically publishers and their mission to be a voice for the Black community. A study of ethnic media in New York City reveals a telling reality of how ethnic media make the online transition in the digital age.
