ABSTRACT

As ethnographic subjects and objects, we are all gendered in the ‘field’. That by itself is hardly surprising considering which moment would be outside gender, but this truth appears occasionally and seldom finds its way into ethnographic research methods. My reflections in this chapter are not only one of isolating gender, but of recalling experiences located in language and body – mine as well as others whom I meet/met – it is this embodied linguistic experience that forms the mnemonic device of collecting notes. The reflections that form a part of the essay belong to a period that now appears hazy, given the distance of time (2009–2013), and since then, Banni has moved from an isolated place to a tourist destination. Women are busier, providing services from the backend, but still within the homes.
