ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to open a scholarly discussion regarding the role of arts-based pedagogy in the media literacy curricula of K-12 schools and tertiary education. Specifically, we posit that arts-based pedagogy is an important step towards inviting student voices, cultivating inclusion, and opening opportunities for students to reveal and redress hidden messages and meanings in media through expressive action. We note that media literacy practice has shifted towards a focus on digital verification since 2016 and that a recentering of the curriculum to invite and honor students’ voices is an important step towards equity.
