ABSTRACT

This chapter brings together design anthropology and media anthropology to outline and demonstrate the meaning of a “media presence” approach to emerging technologies, based on the Australian and Swedish contexts. Emerging technologies, including smart home applications and self-driving cars, are predicted in industry and policy narratives to have beneficial impacts on “our” future societies and the future lives of ordinary people, including older people, and usually within the framings of technological determinist and solutionist paradigms.
