ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I discuss how my vocational process has helped me take a new look at a cornerstone of medical education – human anatomy lab. By bringing in new technologies, critical thinking, cultural competency, and resilience lessons interspersed throughout the course, we can make the human anatomy class a far more meaningful course for undergraduates. Because most students will have a human anatomy course in their professional programs as well, adding in the additional material to help them succeed in school and in life, and the added discussions of vocational discernment have the potential to make a lasting impact. By building in this content, we also have the chance to better equip students with the rigors and reality of the medical professions. As a side effect, I expect courses like this to help level the playing field for students from disadvantaged backgrounds to succeed, and further diversify the health care industry.
