ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates the role played by civil society organizations in reaction to the perverse effects of trade policies and the implementation of human rights policies. Also, it hopes to inspire not only organizations in the Global South with a history of fighting back but also fellow activists from the Global North who have long been partners in solidarity. The Working Group on Intellectual Property (GTPI) was created in the congruence of two social agendas: health as a human right and anti-neoliberal movements. This has shaped the composition of the group, its strategies, its actions, its objectives, and its vision of the future. The GTPI also acted as amicus curiae in another case at the supreme court questioning the constitutionality of patent term extensions applied to pharmaceutical patents in Brazil. The GTPI also established partnerships with universities to produce studies with original data that would become references for important national IP debates.
