ABSTRACT

This chapter employs open-ended questionnaire and semi-structured interview to explore vocabulary learning experiences in both the English for academic purposes (EAP) and the English Medium Instruction (EMI) context. It probes the challenges encountered and vocabulary learning strategies (VLS) used in vocabulary learning in EMI courses. Notwithstanding these positive attitudes towards the role of EAP in vocabulary learning in EMI courses, a few interviewees felt EAP courses could not prepare them for EMI courses. The differential VLS use in finding information and establishing new words reflected the effect of context change, in particular from an English learning context to EMI, on strategy use. Students in the EAP and EMI groups did not display differential patterns of VLS use when planning for vocabulary learning. There is a large amount of research on language learner strategies in the field of second language acquisition.
