ABSTRACT

Corruption has become endemic with negative consequences on all aspects of Nigeria's national life. Corrupt practices are widespread and cause serious damage to Nigeria’s economy and image. It is a cankerworm that needs to be comprehensively addressed if our country is to regain health and begin to function maximally for the benefit of the entire Nigerian people. A descriptive approach was adopted as it affords us the opportunity to review the need for sustainable development in Nigeria. Therefore, this study explored the definition of corruption, types of corruption and causes of corruption. The study also examined endemic corruption in Nigeria and its consequences for national development. It recommends that collaborative efforts should be made by both the citizens and government to fight against corruption so as to pave the way for sustainable development in Nigeria.
