ABSTRACT

No social work Reader would be complete without at least one paper on the subject of care; that this one explores care as a counter-point to neoliberalism is a bonus. In this extract, Joan Tronto, political scientist, starts from the premise that neoliberal policies around the world have made caring more difficult, and yet, building on the seminal work of Carol Gilligan (1982), she argues that a ‘democratic form of care’ offers a way of challenging neoliberalism (p 27). This optimistic vision is one from which we can all take heart.
