ABSTRACT

In this chapter, UK social work academics Suzy Braye and Michael Preston-Shoot address the complex relationship between the law – an important and increasingly expansive body of social work knowledge - and social work practice. They trace the complexities of developing law-informed practice while also setting out some practical principles for doing so. The examples drawn upon are limited to English legislation and statute but many of the insights of this chapter are transferable and/or invite comparative analysis and reflection. What this paper does not do is to explore the ways in which the law has been deeply implicated in the criminalisation of black people and people of colour. Readers should turn to the Further Reading to find out more.
