ABSTRACT

This interview offers some explanation on my cultural productions, particularly the Akorshi Litong Dance of Bendi in Obanliku Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Following the general background, which throws some light on related cultural productions from this Nigeria's ethnic minority but significant group, the interview goes on to reveal the history and thrust of litong music as being a mystical dance largely favored by traditional healers. The interview also reveals the litong dance as a rare but endangered genre of African music, which has been modified without its original essence and esthetics being eroded. In addition to its functional and entertainment value, the performances have also been a source of financial empowerment for the young dancers who have regularly paid their school fees from the proceeds of their routine outings. To ensure its continuity, a younger generation of dancers is being groomed to take over from the older ones who might relocate from the village or simply choose to opt out of the group. Two of them have also almost perfected the art of playing the five-string litong indigenous zither.
