ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the changes made at a community college Writing Center in order to promote equity and social justice for the students who use the Center. The chapter emphasizes that those engaging in antiracist work need to examine how they and the places they work may unintentionally perpetuate institutional racism and describes how the staff working at the Sacramento City College Writing Center engaged in this process and made changes to their hiring practices, tutor education, and the Writing Center's physical and virtual environments. Drawing on the work of authors who write about race, racism, and Writing Centers, the chapter explains the reasons for the changes made and their effects. It also argues that the 2020 national conversations stemming from George Floyd's murder and the unequal educational access highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic underscore that educators must work to dismantle the institutional racism embedded in colleges, including traditional views of what constitutes acceptable language for academic settings.
