ABSTRACT

The supreme organ of the League of Arab States, the Council consists of representatives of the member states, each of which has one vote, and a representative for Palestine. The summit level meeting reviews all issues related to Arab national security strategies, co-ordinates supreme policies of the Arab states towards regional and international issues, reviews recommendations and reports submitted to it by the ministerial meetings, appoints the Secretary-General, and is mandated to amend the League’s Pact. In industries that have recently been introduced to member countries, Arab Joint Companies have been established, while longstanding industries are co-ordinated through Arab Specialized Unions. In October 2010 Arab ministers responsible for electricity adopted a Pan-Arab Strategy for Promoting Renewable Energy, covering the period 2010–30. A Permanent Arab Commission on Human Rights was established in September 1968, with a primary focus on pursuing a settlement to the Arab-Israeli conflict.
