ABSTRACT

The NEA was established in 1958 to further safe, environmentally sound and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The NEA's mission is to assist its member countries in maintaining and further developing the scientific, technological and legal bases required for the safe, environmentally sound and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. The NEA's objectives under its 2017-22 Strategic Plan were to serve as a forum for sharing and analysing information and experience among member countries; to foster international cooperation; to help members to pool and maintain their technical expertise and human infrastructure; and to provide nuclear policy analyses. In January 2012 an NEA panel of experts met with members of the Japanese Advisory Committee for the Prevention of Nuclear Accidents and the special Japanese Task Force for the Reform of Nuclear Safety Regulations and Organizations to discuss improving approaches to the regulation and oversight of nuclear facilities.
