ABSTRACT

Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the principal body to promote co-operation, policy review and debate on economic, social, environmental and humanitarian issues, and on the implementation of internationally agreed sustainable development objectives. Membership is allotted by regions: Africa 14 members, Western Europe and other developed countries 13, Asia 11, Latin America 10, Eastern Europe six. The Bureau, with responsibility for formulating the agenda and programme of work for the Council, is elected by the Council at its first meeting of the year. The Council undertakes a co-ordinating function between the UN and its specialized agencies, and also offers a forum for dialogue on sustainable development issues with policymakers, non-governmental organizations, foundations, academics and the private sector. An ECOSOC Youth Forum has been organized annually since 2012, with participation by young delegates including business people, students and representatives of youth organizations.
