ABSTRACT

Promoting the full implementation of the Conventions, United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) aims to ensure that children worldwide are given the best possible start in life and the opportunity to attain a good level of basic education, and that adolescents are enabled to develop their capabilities and to participate successfully in society. UNICEF works with the International Labour Organization and other partners to promote an end to exploitative and hazardous child labour, and supports special projects to provide education, counselling and care in developing countries. UNICEF promotes ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography. Updated child mortality data is provided on an annual basis by the Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation, established in 2004 by UNICEF, the World Health Organization, the World Bank and the UN Population Division.
