ABSTRACT

Peacekeeping forces—composed of contingents of military personnel, experts and other civilian staff, made available by member states—assist in preventing the recurrence of fighting, restoring and maintaining peace, and promoting a return to normal conditions. In February 2014 a strategic guidance framework for international police peacekeeping outlined the role of UN police deployed to peacekeeping operations and to special political missions. Most police offers serving in UN peacekeeping operations are deployed in highly trained, cohesive formed police units. At the request of the Lebanese government, resolution 1701 also established the maritime task force—the first naval task force to participate in a UN peacekeeping mission—which was deployed from October to support the Lebanese navy in monitoring and securing Lebanon’s territorial waters and coastline, and preventing the unauthorized entry of arms by sea into Lebanon. UNTSO observers have been available at short notice to deploy to and form the nucleus of newly authorized peacekeeping operations.
