ABSTRACT

UN political missions and peacebuilding operations work in the field to prevent and resolve conflicts or to promote enduring peace in post-conflict societies. They are assisted by the department of political and peacebuilding affairs (DPPA), which was established on 1 January 2019. The DPPA’s mediation support unit, supports the mediation capacity of regional organizations; provides logistical, advisory and financial support to peace processes; and collates knowledge on policy and best practices. UNOCA’s priority areas of activity include supporting conflict mediation, and, where requested, assisting with the peaceful conduct of elections in the region; facilitating cohesion in the general regional work of the UN, including in partnership with other agencies. UNITAMS was also to support, as required, the implementation of peace agreements in conflict-affected areas; to assist government-led peacebuilding activities and the strengthening of human rights and rule of law institutions; and to support the mobilization of economic and development assistance, and the co-ordination of humanitarian assistance.
