ABSTRACT

In 2021 United Nations Institute for Training and Researches (UNICRI's) work was focused on the thematic areas: promoting peaceful, just and inclusive societies; promoting people’s wellbeing and supporting equitable representation of countries in global decision-making fora; supporting the conservation, restoration and safeguarding of our planet for present and future generations; promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth. UNICRI is a signatory of the UN global counter-terrorism coordination compact, and supports the UN global counter-terrorism strategy. It manages a training and advanced education department, which administers educational courses, and a master’s of law in international crime and justice. UNICRI’s strategic programme framework for the period 2019–22 identified as principal ongoing challenges: addressing violent extremism through combating weak criminal justice systems, a lack of context-specific responses, and gaps in national and transnational co-operation; and tackling the involvement of transnational crime in both illicit and licit markets.
