ABSTRACT

The International Atomic Energy Agencies (IAEA’s) medium-term strategy for 2018–23 included the following cross-cutting objectives: facilitating access to nuclear power and other nuclear technologies; strengthening the promotion and development of nuclear science, technology and applications and improving nuclear safety and security. The IAEA has since 1992 been actively engaged in the process to develop an international thermonuclear experimental reactor, to expand the use of fusion energy. In co-operation with the world health organization, the IAEA promotes the use of nuclear techniques in medicine, biology and health-related environmental research, provides training, and conducts research on techniques for improving the accuracy of radiation dosimetry. Accordingly, the IAEA dispatched monitoring teams to Japan to provide assistance to local experts, with a particular focus on: worker radiation protection; food safety; marine and soil science; and boiling water reactor technology. The IAEA has installed digital surveillance systems at nuclear sites and maintains an imagery database thereof.
