ABSTRACT

More than 900 scientific and technical companies, public and private operators, broadcasters, academic institutions and other organizations are also International Telecommunication Union (ITU) members. World Conferences on International Telecommunications are held at the request of members and after approval by the Plenipotentiary Conference. The General Secretariat comprises the Office of the Secretary-General; the ITU Telecom Secretariat; and departments of Conferences and Publications; Financial Resources Management; Human Resources Management; Information Services; and Strategic Planning and Membership. ITU took a lead role in organizing the World Summit on the Information Society, which was held, under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General, in two phases: in Geneva, Switzerland, in December 2003, and in Tunis, Tunisia, in November 2005. The Director reports to conferences and to the ITU Council on the activities of the sector. The Director of the Bureau reports to conferences and the ITU Council, and is assisted by an Advisory Board.
