ABSTRACT

In September 2017 the World Tourism Organization (WTO) General Assembly adopted the Chengdu Declaration on Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals, which reiterated the role of tourism in achieving economic, social and environmental objectives and in enhancing sustainable development worldwide. UNWTO helped to organize the inaugural Conference on Sustainable Development in Islands, in reunion, in September 2013, and a second conference in the series, in Nassau, in February 2014. In May 2014 UNWTO issued a Global Report on Shopping Tourism, offering guidelines and case studies for destinations aiming to develop this segment of the tourism sector. UNWTO organized the second World Conference on Smart Destinations in June 2018, in Oviedo, Spain; this addressed, inter alia, governance, technology, innovation, sustainability and accessibility. The UNWTO Academy serves as the organization's focus of activities to support the development of tourism human capital.
