ABSTRACT

The Committee comprises a government representative of each member state tasked with ensuring the implementation of decisions adopted by heads of state or the Council of Ministers, and with overseeing the activities of the General Secretariat. A Secretariat Commission oversees Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA's) five pillars of regional co-operation: social integration, economic integration, democratic security, the comprehensive management of disaster risk and climate change, and strengthening regional institutions. In addition to those listed below, various technical or executive secretariat units support meetings of ministerial Councils, concerned, inter alia, with women, housing, health and finance. In early 2014 SICA, with other partners including the Organization of American States, the Caribbean Tourism Organization and Sustainable Travel International, a non-governmental organization, launched the Americas Sustainable Destinations initiative, with the aim of strengthening public-private partnerships to protect and to improve the lives of local people in selected destination areas.
