ABSTRACT

The Movement is an international independent humanitarian organization, comprising three main components: the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), founded in 1863; the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, founded in 1919; and National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 190 countries; as well as Magen David Adom, an Israeli society equivalent to the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The supreme deliberative body of the Movement, the Conference comprises delegations from the ICRC, the Federation and the National Societies, and of representatives of States Parties to the Geneva Conventions. The Council comprises delegations from the National Societies, from the ICRC and from the Federation. The Council is the body where the representatives of all the components of the Movement meet to discuss matters that concern the Movement as a whole. In November 1997 the Council adopted an Agreement on the organization of the activities of the Movement’s components.
