When undertaking research work it is important to consider its purpose or rationale. This chapter outlines why research work is carried out and identifies some of the core traditions or paradigms in social science-based activity. Similarities and differences are explored and explained so that you can make informed choices about the subsequent tools and techniques you will deploy to help carry out your own work. Ethical aspects linked to specific traditions, approaches and techniques used in research are also covered so that you can be fully prepared for the remaining elements of your project work.
