ABSTRACT

This chapter was written by a Korean psychiatrist in supervision with an American supervisor. The supervision sessions were conducted over the phone between Korea and New York over a period of more than two years. The author illustrates how the supervisor and supervisee were able to overcome technical, cultural, and linguistic barriers. One such example is the supervisee sending the supervisor verbatim transcripts of his sessions in English via email in advance of the supervision hour. Factors including transference, termination, culture, authority, and power dynamics are explored as he takes us through this unique cross-cultural supervision experience.
