ABSTRACT

This chapter is a reflection on the figure and scientific output of Andrzej Stelmachowski, an outstanding scholar, professor of law, lecturer, organizer of academic life, social activist, politician, and coauthor of classics of Polish civil and agricultural law that still serve as valid models in these fields. The branches of civil, agricultural, constitutional, and family law, within the framework of which the professor’s interpretations of selected issues proved particularly important and original, are discussed in greater detail. An essential aspect of the legacy of this great jurist remains the influence of Christian thought on the professed philosophy of law and the postulated shape of public life. Stelmachowski was able to integrate the world of fides and ratio coherently, drawing abundantly on the social teaching of the Catholic Church and Catholic theology. His biography can be considered a model example of the path of an outstanding representative of the generation of Polish intellectuals born in the 1920s, who went through a formative period of war and communism.
