ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the character of George Wickham from Pride and Prejudice first as a failure of the hegemonic/subordinate binaries of masculinity that the patriarchy historically produced. When adapting his character for modern audiences, issues of rank become less relevant, but his social threat needs to be preserved. Consequently, his contemporary failure is interpreted as toxic behaviors: particularly aggression, violence, and emotional/psychological abuse.
