ABSTRACT

Systems psychodynamics, both theory and practice, is an evolving field within the social sciences and consultancy practice. A significant aspect of the systems psychodynamics model is the combining of systems concepts and psychoanalytic concepts. An organisation is an open system and is defined by Miller as systems that “exist and can only exist by the exchange of materials with their environment”. Miller added the contribution of Von Bertalanffy of equifinality, which is an end result that can be gained through diverse methods. The sociotechnical systems theories were discovered through the research and consultancy in the mining industry in the English coal fields by Trist and Bamforth in the late 1940s. Czander suggested that the primary task of the systems psychodynamics model is to heighten awareness so as to better understand the hidden significance of organisational behaviour, and thus comprehend the profounder and unconscious processes that consultants encounter.
