ABSTRACT

The Republic of Cyprus came into existence in 1960 as a presidential democracy. The Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus sets out the role of each branch of government and is permeated throughout by the principle of separation of powers. This chapter focuses on the administration of the House of Representatives as it stands today. The House of Representatives convenes in one ordinary session each year, usually commencing in September and ending in July, with regular committee meetings taking place throughout the working week and a plenary meeting once a week. The Services and Personnel of the House of Representatives Law 1961 provided for the creation of a Publications Service, a Committees Service, a Protocol Service, each comprising two officials, as well as four stenographers, five messengers and three telephone operators. As with all legislatures, the personnel of the House provide various supporting services to the Members.
