ABSTRACT

The Danish parliament, the Folketing, is a one-chamber legislature with 179 members representing about 11 political parties. Members are elected at least every fourth year, but the Prime Minister can dissolve parliament and call for election at any time. This chapter focuses on Folketing's administration and its political tasks in particular. It is based on information available in parliamentary documents and interviews with key staffers in the administration,4 who have been crucial for describing the procedures for how the administration supports parliamentary activity. The chapter analyses the organization and resources of the administration. It then analyses the way the administration supports the political work of MPs in standing committees, and analyses how administration supports the parliament's international relations and the activities regarding the European Union in particular. The chapter also concludes by discussing the challenges and opportunities facing Folketing's administration both in the short term – such as the Covid-19 pandemic – and in the long term.
