ABSTRACT

The year 2021 marked the 200th anniversary of the modern Greek State. Its top representative institution, the Hellenic Parliament, is now operating not far away from where the Pnyx stands, the birthplace of Athenian Democracy during the golden age of Perikles two and a half millennia ago. This chapter is dedicated to the form, functions and challenges of the Hellenic Parliament. It discusses the development of both personnel strength and budget over the past two decades and presents key organizational aspects. The chapter highlights inter-institutional and inter-parliamentary cooperation and provides the analysis of contemporary parliamentary challenges, such as digital transformation and the response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The parliamentary administration of the Hellenic Parliament has considerably evolved over the past two decades, in terms of staff, tools and resources. When studying the evolution in the number of employees, a significant correlation with budget development can be determined between 2004 and 2015.
