ABSTRACT

The current administrative structure of the Knesset is the direct result of the decision of the Knesset Speaker of the 17th Knesset, Dalia Itzik, to appoint a Director General, who would take over all the non-parliamentary functions of the Knesset from the Secretary General, since both in quantitative and qualitative terms, the administrative workload had become too heavy for the Secretary General to bear alone. The Secretary General of the Knesset is appointed by the Speaker and his/her Deputies, in accordance with the Appointment of the Knesset Secretary General Law. The position of the Legal Advisor was created in the early 1980s and became statutory in 2000, when provisions for his/her selection were introduced into the Knesset Law. Important changes in the Knesset administrative structure began in the 1980s, when the Legal Department and the Computerization Department were established.
