ABSTRACT

Artificial wombs might be thought of as a way to resolve the abortion debate by enabling the lives of unwanted prenatal human beings to be preserved. However, recent scholarly discussion indicates that this view is too optimistic. Many defenders of abortion now argue for abortion not just as a termination of pregnancy but also as a termination of a prenatal human being’s life. For them, the primary problem is not only the pregnancy itself but the very existence of a son or daughter. This chapter evaluates some of the arguments in defense of this view and shows they are inadequate to justify killing prenatal human beings.
