ABSTRACT

Areas of chronic social and economic disadvantage, such as Blackpool in the North West of England, have often been viewed as hostile territory for the study of Ancient History, literature and languages. This chapter demonstrates the successful introduction and growth of Latin, supported by other classical subjects, in colleges, schools and a Pupil Referral Unit in the local area. The opportunity to incorporate Latin into the curriculum by training non-specialist teachers has been beneficial for both staff and students, resulting in significant and measurable improvements in vocabulary development for pupils who face multiple barriers to their learning.
