ABSTRACT

This research evaluates how the choice of Latin coursebook can impact students' perceptions of Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) people in the Roman world. A total of 165 boys aged 12–14 learning Latin in a selective state-maintained school using either Cambridge Latin Course (UK Fourth Edition) or Suburani completed a survey. A total of 22 then attended one of two focus groups. The results suggest that a book with greater visibility of BAME characters (Suburani) promotes an understanding that BAME people were present in Roman society, but that further intervention is required to ensure that students have the opportunity to reflect critically on their perceptions of textbook characters and narratives.
