ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the intersection of religion, gender, and gender identity. Drawing on research that examines the experiences of cisgender women and men as well as trans persons, we examine contexts in which women outnumber men in religious affiliation and participation, as well as the reverse. The chapter goes on to explore how changing gender role expectations shape the experiences of women, men, and trans persons around the world. We look at cases in which individuals comply with, resist, or use religion as a means of empowerment. The chapter includes a discussion of the experiences of women who increasingly lead faith communities and the issues they face in doing so. The chapter is unique in addressing how gender non-binary people negotiate the cisgendered world of religion throughout.
