ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces heritage professionals to a topic that is far more complex than it might appear, both in terms of defining what we mean by it, and how we might evaluate it. It examines the role of museums as vehicles for healing and wellbeing. The book discusses methods for evaluating the impact of cultural participation via museums – pioneered at UCL – before considering the role of exhibition space in providing an opportunity for healing and sharing stories among Australian military veterans. It provides analysis of results from some of the key veteran-focused archaeological initiatives – the programmes that provided such momentum to the concept that archaeology could deliver therapeutic benefits.
